Jan creates exquisite black, cream and green glazed functional pottery at her studio in Portola Valley, CA. She is especially known for her covered containers with unique handles; the artist also specializes in textured slab plates and platters.
A graduate of the University Massachusetts, Jan was working in New York City as a microbiologist when she began to study at Greenwich House Pottery. Hooked on clay, she continued to explore the art form and realized her goal of becoming a full time artist when she relocated to California in the 1970s. Outside of the studio, Jan is a longtime arts activist, and has served on the boards of the National Council on Ceramic Arts and the Craft Emergency Relief Fund. Her work is represented collections including those of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution.
