Kathy Wismar

Minneapolis artist Kathy Wismar is both a ceramicist specializing in wheel thrown and hand built, functional pottery, and an abstract painter working in watercolors and acrylics. In both media, her skill with form and color play are evident. “To be an artist,” Kathy states, “is to live through your work. It involves more than simply ‘making things.’ It is a fiery mixture of seeing what is not yet real and working to make it happen … of wishing the clay could understand your dreams, your hopes … and your frustrations. It is working until the ache in your muscles does pitched battle with the flights of your imagination, and you have no choice but to continue until there is resolution … no matter how fleeting that moment may be or what time it is on the clock.”
Kathy has been exhibiting her work nationally since 1992. Before settling in Minnesota, she established an independent ceramic studio in Alexandria, VA. The artist has honed her craft at workshops and through study projects over the years, notably at Colorado’s Anderson Ranch and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. She is a regular participant in Randy and Jan McKeachie Johnston’s annual Wood Kiln Firing Week in River Falls, WI.
