John’s lively, complex compositions are characteristic of his prints as well as his paintings. He renders his subjects with a feeling of immediacy and movement. John has worked extensively with engraving, woodcuts and lithographs, exploring the possibilities of each process in the context of his interest in human behavior and the human form, animal studies, landscape and – most distinctively – urban life.
“I consider myself a painter first but have always had a special affection for printmaking,” John explains. “It all started in my mid-teens with a piece of linoleum. As I progressed in my career I found the aforementioned media complimented my painting beautifully.”
The artist is a graduate of Luther College in Decorah, IA and earned an MFA at the University of Iowa.
