Richard James Nelson

St. Paul based printmaker Richard James Nelson specializes in wood block and linocut prints that focus on plant and animal life. The artist takes inspiration from time spent at his century-old home on Minnesota’s North Shore. His work is notable for the use of dark brown rather than black inks to define forms in a way that echoes the earth itself.

Richard, who holds a BA from St. Paul’s College of Visual Arts, grew up just north of the Twin Cities, where, he explains, he “learned to commune with tumble weeds and important survival skills including when and when not to enter the farmer’s field.”
