Susan Morrissey

A printmaker and painter who also works in clay, Susan Morrissey creates work that addresses the human experience. Her print images arise from everyday happenings, from jury duty to family dinner.

“A cast of fictional and non-fictional characters continue to inhabit my prints, paintings and sculptures,” states the artist. “They exist on a plane where nonsense and meaningfulness come together. Despite confined environments, the characters narrate a broad spectrum of emotion, from contentedness to anxiety. Seduction of Chickman, is a parody on fowl courage; Chickman, despite his bad rap as “chicken” does not shy from the fair maiden. My interest in activating the surface of my prints is visible in the most recent, Seduction of Chickman and Flight of the Dragon. With the first, I’ve created a collage of pre-colored papers onto which I’ve printed the image; with the other; I’ve used many plates to overlay multiple colors, patterns and auxiliary elements.”

Susan earned a BA from the University of North Dakota and graduate degrees from the University of Louisville and Indiana University. She has exhibited her work nation-wide since 1979 and recently established a new studio in Fargo, ND.
