Robert Erickson

Robert Erickson is known for the functional, museum quality furniture pieces he crafts at his Nevada City, CA studio. The artist and his colleagues produce around 75 pieces each year, specializing in chairs, desks and tables.

Robert earned a degree in English from the University of Nebraska in 1969 before heading for San Francisco to become a furniture maker. He found that chairmaking was best suited to his practice, had success with the form, and continues to be intrigued by its particular design challenges. “The sitter imposes endless stresses on the chair, which, in turn, imposes its own stresses on the sitter,” notes Robert, who seeks to design pieces that are comfortable, original and good-looking.

The artist has earned awards at Denver’s Art of Crafts, the St. Louis Art Fair, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, the St. Paul American Craft Council show and the Sausalito Art Festival. He work is included in the collections of the Minnesota Museum of American Art, Yale University Art Gallery, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
