William Dohman

In the same way broken pottery has been mended with gold through a Japanese technique known as kintsugi, St. Paul designer and woodworker William Dohman is rejuvenating cracked or misshapen boards with contrasting wooden butterfly ties or Xs. Together, these pieces live again as functional, food-safe cutting boards, what William calls “Arikata” – “the way something ought to be.” These mended boards are original, and no two are alike.

William began his creative career as an architect and editor, and following a particularly sweet gift he made for his wife Katie, turned his his design ideas into a successful home-decor business. Together, the couple collaborates to create wall pieces, functional kitchen ware and children’s toys from upcycled woods and thoughtfully-sourced materials.
