Project Description

Of his landscapes in oil and watercolor, St. Paul artist Don Biehn states, “I want the viewer to feel they have stood in the same spot, felt the breeze, smelled the air and water and know the texture of the scene.”

Don is influenced by his boyhood exploration of the hills, valleys, lakes and riverbanks of southwestern Wisconsin. He attended the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL, and, after training in design, illustration and fine art, he worked as a commercial artist in Milwaukee and San Francisco, eventually opening his own graphic design studio in Minneapolis. During this time, he continued his fine art practice, and now paints fulltime, throughout the seasons, in the plein-aire tradition. Don has received many honors for his work, which is regularly shown in galleries and juried exhibitions – including the Oil Painters of America annual exhibitions – nationwide.

In 2011, Don’s work was named “best-of-the-best in impressionism” with the President’s Choice Award – one of only 6 primary awards in a juried exhibition of 200 paintings – from the American Impressionist Society. The artist is a signature member of the Society, and has earned the distinction of signing his work with the “AIS” initials.
